Rejoicing amidst our Sorrows, helped by JS Bach - Frauenkirche Dresden, Germany The Baroque-style Frauenkirche Dresden (Church of our Lady, Dresden) was built from 1726 through 1743 and was the defining structure in Dresden’s skyline until it was destroyed in the firebombing of Dresden in the middle of February, 1945, just months before the surrender of Germany in WW II. It was rebuilt from 1994-2005 using as much of the original stone as possible, with the difference in color of the stones (the lighter ones are new) serving as a memorial to the destruction and death of the war. The rebuilding was financed entirely from donations that poured in from around the world. Bach is closely associated with the Frauenkirche and its organ. Bach wanted to be Dresden’s Royal Court Composer but was never appointed. He played the inaugural concert on the organ when the church was completed and more than 5 other public performances at the Royal Court and the Frauenkirche. Arriving at Christmas in a time of Plague - Frauenkirche Dresden, Germany The Baroque-style Frauenkirche Dresden (Church of our Lady, Dresden) was built from 1726 through 1743 and was the defining structure in Dresden’s skyline until it was destroyed in the firebombing of Dresden in the middle of February, 1945, just months before the surrender of Germany in WW II. It was rebuilt from 1994-2005 using as much of the original stone as possible, with the difference in color of the stones (the lighter ones are new) serving as a memorial to the destruction and death of the war. The rebuilding was financed entirely from donations that poured in from around the world. Bach is closely associated with the Frauenkirche and its organ. Bach wanted to be Dresden’s Royal Court Composer but was never appointed. He played the inaugural concert on the organ when the church was completed and more than 5 other public performances at the Royal Court and the Frauenkirche. Wrapping up the Christmas season Carl Gustav Jung (1875 - 1961) one of the leading thinkers and depth psychologists of his era contributed substantially with his Analytical Psychology to an improved understanding of human psychology and mental disorders. He was born in 1875 as a Lutheran pastor's son in Switzerland. While working as a psychiatrist , he became one of Freud's most respected students until the relationship ended over differences in theoretical understanding. This led Jung to develop his Analytical Psychology, which goes far beyond the realms of psychology and psychiatry in their meaning for our times. The square is a spot for cultural activities today (like this concert). In 1923 it was famous as the place where Hitler's mob marched before he was arrested. The monument with the arches was built in 1844 by King Ludvig of Bavaria to honor his Generals. The church was built in 1690, but not finished until 100 years later. The whole complex is situated at what was once the north gate in Munich's city wall, built in 1391. The city first appears in written records in the 1150s, but there were Benedictine monks on the site as early as the 700s.
